San Francisco is a city you can visit on foot. But it is still quite wide and we all dream of being able to cross the famous Golden Gate bridge.
The use of a bike for a day is very easy because it allows you to see wonderful landscapes from San Francisco and you can also enjoy the entire bay when you are pedalling to Sausalito. I recommend a bike, especially when you have a short stopover in the city (3 days for example).
There are several bike rental companies available, but I really liked mine. First of all because a 20% discount is directly available on their website. They are not only cheaper than their competitors, they are also very friendly.
Book directly on the San Francisco Bicycle Rentals website: the Comfort Hybrid bike will be more than enough for a ride of several hours and will cost you only $24! You'll find them on Jefferson St, by the water.
Pedal to Sausalito
That's the point of your day! The trick (and it will be explained to you very well by the bike rental company) is to go to Sausalito, the town on the other side of the bridge, and take the ferry home (which will cost you a few dollars, nothing bad). Or you make the return by bike if you're in good shape, everything will depend on your schedule.
Expect some nice climbs on the road, especially the one just before reaching Golden Gate Bridge. Then enjoy the different views, while paying attention to other cyclists and sportsmen. The city of Sausalito will of course be indicated and you will find an enormous slope... to descend. Again, everything will be indicated. Just follow the main street and at some point you will cross the pontoons to reach the ferries. The price is about 5$ and you will of course take your bike on board. Don't worry, everyone does it!
I do not regret to have made the return trip by ferry since we have absolutely magnificent landscapes, first of all on the Golden Gate but also on the Alcatraz prison.
